U13 Hurling Champions

A packed sideline cheered on the U13 Naomh Mearnog Division 3 Hurling champions in Carrickhill to a fantastic victory yesterday the 15th Oct.  The lads walked off the pitch to a great ovation and thoroughly deserved every minute of it.

A win was needed to close out the hurling season as league leaders and champions but the Whitehall opposition had an entirely different agenda on their minds.  The fact the same opposition won our last encounter added a further consideration to the game.

From the moment the game kicked off at 3:30 sharp the lads to a man gave everything they had.  The first 15 minutes proved only that this looked like it was going to be a very tight 60 minutes with hugely impressive hurling from both sides.  As the game progressed however The Naomh Mearnog side started to exercise increasing control and went into half time with a comfortable lead.  The half-time talk centered on keeping the discipline, razor sharp marking and “keeping it simple”.  No-one would be surprised to hear that it can be hard to keep the attention of a bunch of 12 & 13 year olds, but not for the 5 minutes at half time yesterday.  They were “in the zone” and as the second 30 mins progressed the team pulled away and closed out the match very quickly.

All of the players on the panel deserve a mention and for that reason as mentors we will simply say that they all know the vital role they played in yesterday’s victory.

The match was followed by a trip back to the club where following the Gaelic 4 Mothers All Ireland the mood in the club bar would be described as already “celebratory” and getting increasingly so and we were only to happy to add our win into the mix.

Final Score Naomh Mearnog 8g 8P : Whitehall 1G 5P
