Our girls claim the camogie summer cup

Posted September 15, 2014

Congrats to our Camogie team who captured the Summer cup on Sunday!!

Girls were up bright and early on sunday morning buzzing for the long awaited final of the summer cup. There was great support on the sideline and made for a great sporting game of camogie. Unfortunately Padraic Gilligan who is the mentor and brought the girls to this stage of the competition was away and I know he would have loved to have been there. Tom O’Sullivan the senior manager who trains the teams with Padraic stepped in and got the team all raring to go.

It was a good clear sunny day in Portmarnock and after all the very hard months of training it all came down to just one match to win some silverware.

Faughs were a very strong team and from the first whistle we knew it was going to be a very tough and physical game. Within the first few minutes captain Caoimhe O’Callaghan scored our first point from a lovely corner angle and we were off. Half forwards Ellen Kenny and Deirdre O’Connor notched up a few points

For the first 10 minutes NM dominated the game scoring a few points. Faughs started fighting back and were scoring too, keeping the back line very busy. It was a very tight first half and the game could have gone either way, At half time the score was 6 points NM and 2 points to Faughs.

Both teams started the second half very strongly. Faughs scored a goal and then there was only 4 points in it. The Mearnog girls dug deep and fought for every ball and as a result chalked up some lovely points and a goal. Full back Laura Walsh scored some great points from frees. The midfield section were winning the ball from most of the puck outs from goalkeeper Deirde Mc Gill, going on to send the ball forward and scoring some wonderful goals and points from the full and half forward lines.

Faughs kept fighting back and scored a few points. But the Mearnog girls kept putting the ball over the bar, scoring point after point. When Laura Walsh stood up to take a free in the last ten minutes she put the sliothar in the goal and we knew it was nearly in the bag.

A couple more points after that for NM and the final whistle was blown.
Each and every one on the team played their hearts out and gave 100 percent. It was a fantastic game to watch from the sideline.

Well done to all.

Naomh Mearnog 2-15 Faughs 2-4.
