Sunsets on a memorable day for U14’s Ladies Football
With the light fading in Mobhi Road the U14’s Ladies held on for a hard fought Championship final victory over their determined hosts Na Fianna.
In a tight first quarter Na Fianna were first to register with a well taken point.
Mearnogs weren’t behind for long however as 2 quick fire points from captain Ciara Mullin edged them into the lead.
As the half progressed the Mearnogs girls began to take control and further points from Carla Brogan, Niamh Costello and Orlaith McGarry gave them a 5 points to 3 halftime advantage
The second half began as the first one ended but a combination of dogged Na Fianna defending and a difficult pitch meant that the usually prolific Mearnogs forwards dominance wasn’t being reflected on the scoreboard.
With Na Fianna starting to exert some pressure of their own Mearnogs were becoming increasingly dependent on their defence, expertly marshalled by Francesca Mifsud-Naughton and Robyn Callery to keep them in the game. Their luck couldn’t hold out forever and a Na Fianna goal meant Mearnogs found themselves behind for the first time since the early stages. When Na Fianna breached the Mearnogs rearguard again only a superb reaction save from second half goalkeeper Niamh Costello kept Mearnogs in the game.
The goal and near miss served as a wake up call to a Mearnogs team who have proved all season that they are never beaten till the final whistle has blown. Dynamic midfield duo Danielle McFadden and Ruth Lenihan began to wrest back control and when Rebekah Gaynor expertly finished an excellent team move there was only going to be one winner.
Rebecca Wall raised another green flag and the 5 point advantage combined with the Black and Amber defensive wall meant there was to be no way back for Na Fianna.
All that remained was to collect the cup, beep our way through Portmarnock and back to the club to devour some Brezzis pizza. When the victorious camogie minors arrived back with a cup of their own it was the perfect way to finish a memorable day!
