Last Saturday saw the inaugural Govan Jolliffe-Byrne Tournament take place in Pairc Mearnóg under sunny skies.
From early morning busloads of U13 boys and their supporters arrived at the club in great anticipation. The standard of football on the day was exceptional as was the spirit in which the games were played. Magherafelt won the Cup and Ballincolling the Shield, thanks to each of the 16 teams and their mentors from all four provinces who participated in the tournament. Many thanks to Govan’s parents Bob and Elaine who presented the Cup, the Shield and the medals to the winning teams.
Many thanks also to the sponsors of the Tournament and to those businesses that provided prizes for the raffle that was held on the night of the event. Thanks also to those who bought raffle tickets and those who took part in the Sweep. Between the raffle, the sweep and the collection buckets €2,200 was raised in much needed funds for Barnardos Children’s Charity.
However the real winner on the day was the celebration and memory of Govan. A special thanks to every team who participated and also to the Naomh Mearnóg volunteers who played a huge part in the success of the event. We look forward to meeting you all again in 2017.
