It was fantastic to see the community of Portmarnock coming together to commemorate 1916 on Saturday, 23rd April, the centenary of the day on which the Rising was set to commence.
The event, supported by Fingal County Council and held in Naomh Mearnóg GAA hall, was a resounding success. The presentation, packed with atmosphere and historic detail, portrayed the poverty of the time, the games children played and how the lives of ordinary people were affected; through authentic imagery and statements, music, song and dance.
There were participants from Port Mearnóg Ceoltas musicians, Portmarnock Singers, C Sharps, Portmarnock Musical & Dramatic Society, boys and girls from Naomh Mearnóg, Malahide Historic Society, local Irish dance schools, Naomh Mearnóg Ground Force Crew. The amazing replica of the GPO was built by Portmarnock Scouts.
