U13 Girls dig deep to beat Na Fianna by the minimum!

Posted March 3, 2016

Naomh Mearnog started strongly with a skillfull display of football. In the first half dogged defensive displays by Orlaith Kiernan (in her first appearance for the team), Emily McCartney, Emma Kavanagh and Carla Ingham exhibiting clean tackles and great instinctive football, kept Na Fianna from netting a score.

Our hard work in training and the girls improving skills could be seen when Ruth Lenihan dispossessed the opposition on the goal line clearing the ball to Carla Brogan on the right wing. A great movement of play followed with a kick-pass to Rebecca Wall who kicked up to our forwards Sophie Grouse and Robyn Doyle. Following a scuffle on the ground a hot ball was thrown up on the right wing on the 13 yard line. Rebecca won the ball in the air and in one fluid movement turned and put it over the bar. The girls dug deep and just before the end of the first half a long kick from Ruth in goal found Carla Brogan who hopped and solo’d up the pitch before dropping the ball into the back of the net. We finished 3 points up at the half time whistle.

Na Fianna started the second half strongly netting two goals in as many minutes obliterating our half time lead. The girls however kept their heads up and following a driving long ball up from Niamh Costello in goal some great teamwork saw Robyn Doyle passing the ball across to Sophie Grouse who slammed the ball off the woodwork, Robyn quickly kicked the rebound into the back of the net. Niamh Costello and Abbie Byrne showed great speed and skill in midfield and in the final quarter Ailbhe Creane Lynch put on a fine display in goal saving a number of driving shots and keeping us in the game. The game was so tight that by the end, we had to wait for the ref to add up the scores before we new the outcome!

Well done to all the girls.

Naomh Mearnog 6-7 (25) Na Fianna B 4-12 (24)
