Sunday morning at 8.30am the Big Dublin Cycle sped along the coast road as it made its way to Malahide and just over an hour later at Naomh Mearnog there were Mammies and Daddies racing everywhere with their little girls by the hand some of whom were about to wear the black and amber jersey for the first time as we prepared for our Under 8 and 9 games.
Excitement was mounting as our opponents Westmanstown Gaels arrived. Owen Carroll, Paul Mullen, Katie Jones, Brendan Eddery, Torlach McAllister, Joe McNally, Barry Gogarty, Terence O’Connor, Lily’s mom Miriam and John Doyle raced around frantically setting up goals and nets. Some courses are required for fixing nets as some of our established mentors struggled with this simple task, thankfully Miriam rescued them.
Everything was in readiness for the 10am throw in as the managers received last minute instructions from our high flying supremo Joe as he headed for San Fran with a promise of several All Ireland tickets on his return.
With teams briefed some in the style of Mickey Harte others in the the flamboyant style of the Dubs we were ready for the off. We had to temporarily transfer some players to Westmanstown Gaels for massive fees but happily they all returned to us at the end. Our girls turned in superb performances as well as having brilliant fun and as they played, chatted to their opponents they were all cheered on by sleepy parents and very proud grandparents.
Well done to everyone on a great day and we look forward with great excitement as the girls continue to learn and enjoy the game. A special word of thanks to our referees Amy, Lauren and Rachel.
