Juvenile Camogie Round-Up. U10s, U11s and U12s in pre Easter Eggstravaganza!
With all other juvenile camogie fixtures falling foul of the weather, it was left to our u10s, u11s and u12s to fly the camogie Black and Amber last weekend!
U10s: Our U10s travelled to Chanel for fixtures against Parnells and Peregrines on Saturday afternoon. Each of our 11 a side teams played two matches and we came away with very impressive wins in the four matches. Playing on the all -weather surfaces suited our girls down to a tee. Fast ball, fast wrists. Blink and you’d miss a trick! 28 Mearnóg girls….28 players of the match! We rolled in to the doughnut stand afterwards for well earned rewards!
Fógra: Well done to our u10 star Mia Ellis. She hit the hurling wall jackpot at Friday evenings training session, bagging the Easter Eggstravaganza for most strikes on target at the hurling wall.
U11s: Summer Time began officially on Sunday and although the U11’s lost an hour in bed with the clocks going forward, they certainly lost no time in making their mark on this Blitz fixture.
From the off, the girls descended on the opposition like a swarm of bees – with Sophie Twiss (or Twister as she’s known to her team-mates) buzzing around upfront while Orlaith Kiernan and Kate McCarthy ensured that midfield was a hive of activity.
There were some stinging clashes elsewhere on the park with Alanna “Beep Beep” Carr and Keya “Binger” Crosbie working hard on both wings (plenty of nicknames on this team – all part of the fun!).
Sadbh Loughran gets a special mention for her performance on the day as does Amy Gleeson who, recovering from a bruised knuckle, scored a wonderful 45 to clinch the match.
Great performances all round and special thanks also to the Mams and Dads who braved the elements to help out.
Coach : Mick ” Bossy Boots ” Hughes.
U12s: Our U12 camogie team welcomed Na Fianna to Pairc Mearnóg on Saturday for a challenge game. With a couple of players out of action from both teams we decided to play one 15 aside game on a full length pitch and the excitement from both sets of players as they lined out was palpable . There is never much between Na Fianna and Mearnóg at U12 level and both teams served up an exciting first half display encouraged by eager parents from both clubs. At half-time the Na Mearnóg girls led by a point, thanks to a well taken free by Orlaith McGarry despite the swirling wind. The second half continued nip and tuck with super displays from both sets of girls. The wind played a major factor in the second half and despite heroic defending by the Mearnóg girls they were unlucky to concede 2 goals late on. It was a thrilling match with the girls giving it 150% despite the poor weather conditions. Notable displays by the Mearnóg back-line of Rebecca Wall, Anna Foley, Julie Cosgrove, Carla Brogan, Kate Boran and Orlaith Kiernan.
Next League game is away on April 11th when girls take on Kilmacud Crokes
