Victory for under 17 girls in their Shield Final

Posted November 2, 2014

In an enthralling battle at Páirc Mearnóg our Under 17 Girls emerged victorious over a gallant St. Monica’s side on a scoreline of 4-5 to 2-8.

In the first half our girls played into a very stiff breeze and half way through the half they appeared to be in all kinds of trouble as St. Monica’s raced into a lead of 2-3 to 0-1. However following excellent play involving Lauren Waters and Sarah Brennan the latter finished the ball to the net. Almost immediately the same two players combined to set up Katie Jones for a second goal. However St Monica’s continued to impress and Under 13 star Katie Flanagan who was superb in goal made two excellent saves and together with Amy Rogan, Lauren Delaney and the majestic Aoibhe Dillon the efforts of the opposition were repelled and with Fia Donnelly and Sarah Kearns starting to play really well in midfield Naomh Mearnóg were well in the game. At halftime we were 3 points down and manager Mick Colreavy was quite happy.

At the start of the second half St Monica’s continued to pressurise and stretched their lead to 5 points. At this stage wing forwards Katie Howley and Rachel Donnelly and Fia Donnelly and Sarah Kearns were on top and together with Caoimhe Kenny, Sarah Brennan and Lauren Waters they were beginning to have an influence on the game. It was at this stage this stage that Dublin Under 14 vice captain Ciara Holland was introduced and her pinpoint passes were creating opportunities for the other forwards and this led to two brilliant goals by Sarah Brennan, the second following a great pass by Lauren Waters. At this point Naomh Mearnóg were 4 points up but St Monica’s came again and reduced the lead to two points. However the Mearnóg girls defended brilliantly with Abbie Mooney, Amy Jones and Alannah O’Brien all defending as if their lives depended on it. Katie Flanagan was also outstanding during this period.

There was great delight when the referee blew the final whistle and Mearnóg were winners and there followed great celebration as captain Rachel Donnelly stepped forward to collect the trophy.
