Girls win the Feile!

Girls win the Feile!

Posted April 24, 2014

Congratulations to our Feile winning girls team! Our two point win over Cuala was our first ever ladies Feile Success!

Naomh Mearnog 1 – 13      Cuala   4 – 02

The game began with Mearnog playing into the wind and after a good start by both teams it was Cuala who took the lead with a point from Sinead Wild. The Cuala girls were settling well and after picking up possession in the middle of the park a high ball sent into the square managed to find its way into the net Cuala were looking good. Mearnog began to settle into their own game and after some good play by the forwards were rewarded with two points from play which were converted by Ciara Holland.
Mearnog started to dominate the game with Maria Kelly battling hard in the middle of the field and this hard work resulted in Holland kicking two more pointed frees to bring the game level. With half time approaching Cuala had the opportunity to go ahead but two missed frees left the teams going in level at half time.

The second half began with both sides battling for possession in the middle third and Cuala now playing into the wind had a couple of scoring chances but great defending from the Mearnog backs kept the score level. Mearnog were next on the score board a point after a lovely passing movement up the field. Mearnog were dominating the midfield but despite having some good scoring chances the Cuala defence held firm and it was Cuala who registered the next score. Orlagh Doyle Cuala’s sharpshooter ran at the  defence and shot past the keeper to give Cuala a 2 point lead. Mearnog replied quickly with Leah McElroy sending over a great score to reduce the lead to a single point and with the next play Mearnog got a free and it was Holland again who levelled the scores.

This match was going end to end with all the players giving everything they had in pursuit of Feile glory. The game was just entering its final stages when Mearnog added two more scores from Holland. The girls from Portmarnock could sense the game turning their way 2 points up but this game had more to offer. In the final minute Cuala won possession in the middle and the ball made its way to Orlagh Doyle who without having to look up struck a shot which hit the back of the Mearnog net, Cuala 1 point up and their supporters in the stand felt it was their day but drama was to follow.

Katie Flanagan kicked the ball out and the busy Claire McGowan won the ball and delivered it into the forward line a black and amber shirt won it turned and shot, a goal to win it a point to draw but no it hit the cross bar and hung in the air supporters of both sides were out of their seats as it stayed in the air for what seemed like a life time then a hand reached up and guided the ball towards the goal, in slow motion the ball hit the post and settled in the net Mearnog were ahead.

The Referee called for the ball before it could be kicked out and the game was over Mearnog had achieved their first ladies Feile Success.
